How to use the letter wheel
- Click Spin. The wheel starts with all 26 letters, A to Z.
- The pointer lands on your random letter.
- Press Remove from wheel if you’re playing a round where letters shouldn’t repeat.
Games and activities with a random letter
- Scattergories and “Name, Place, Animal, Thing”: spin a letter, then race to fill each category with a word starting with it.
- Phonics and early reading: have children say the letter’s sound or a word that begins with it.
- Spelling bees and vocabulary: choose the starting letter for the next word.
- Party games: in “Categories”, each player names something in a category that starts with the letter until someone gets stuck.
- Creative prompts: pick the first letter of a character name, a band name or a story title.
Tips for fairer word games
Not every letter is equally playable. If you want rounds that are challenging but not impossible, remove Q, X and Z, or add common letters like S, T and C twice to make them more likely.
Frequently asked questions
Can I remove hard letters like Q, X and Z?
Yes. Delete them from the entries box. Many Scattergories players remove Q, U, V, X, Y and Z because few words start with them.
How do I make a vowels-only or consonants-only wheel?
Clear the entries and type just the letters you want, for example A, E, I, O and U for a vowel wheel. The wheel remembers your list on this device.
Can I stop the same letter coming up twice?
After each spin, press "Remove from wheel". The letter is taken off, so every letter appears once until the wheel is empty.
Does it work for other alphabets?
Yes. Type any characters into the entries box, such as Ñ, Ä or Greek and Cyrillic letters, and the wheel will use them.
